Re-live your SoundLand experience with this dandy little video recap and a gallery of glorious photos. It's a nod back to an incredibly-special 2011 event while we look forward to October 2012!
As we prepare for SoundLand 2012, we wanted to give you a chance to revisit what we were up to last fall during SoundLand 2011. Check out all the old blog posts below and we look forward to announcing more 2012 details soon!
We're excited to announce final details about the BIG, outdoor Saturday extravaganza – the Neuhoff Factory Party. While the lineup Saturday includes JEFF the Brotherhood, Those Darlins, The Black Belles, and other kickin' bands (read more below)... this isn’t your typical show. Other than being in one of the coolest warehouses in Germantown, we're loading up the party with a giant inflatable dragon (no, we're not joking), a 30 foot waterslide (still not joking), some of the city's best food trucks, plus poster artists and other cool stuff in the SoundLand Warehouse. >> See the Factory Party schedule
We're pumped to witness some of the most talked about, blogged about, tweeted about artists from Nashville, Knoxville, and beyond sharing the same stage at the Factory Party.
Royal Bangs – These Knoxville natives compare favorably to our own homegrown heroes The Features, with their electric live performances and infectious indie pop songs. Their debut on Glassnote (Phoenix, Mumford & Sons) earlier this year earned them high praise and a slot on Letterman. » Watch the Letterman performance
Jessica Lea Mayfield – Produced by now-Nashville resident and Black Key Dan Auerbach, JLM's second album for Nonesuch is a stunner. Uncut calls it "dark, dangerous and utterly compelling." We agree.
The Apache Relay – The passion and integrity of this hard-to-pin-down Southern indie ensemble has helped them connect with fans and with peers alike. Look who showed up at their basement party in Nashville earlier this year...
» Find out who
Tristen – Her debut record is already being discussed not just as a great artistic statement but as a new take on an old music business model. Live, she's one of the artists that every other performer in town points to as the "real deal". » See why
The Black Belles – Jack White's newest project is a Nashville all-girl (all witch?) band whose goth-garage pop has already caught the famous ears of Stephen Colbert and who will be debuting a new single at this very show. » Check out their video for "What Can I Do?"
JEFF The Brotherhood – Nashville's second most famous rock and roll brotherhood (right behind the Kings of Leon), have been absolutely destroying stages (literally) around the world for the last few years and are soon to be releasing their major label debut on Warner Bros. Even Jay-Z is picking up these DIY trailblazers. » Read what Jay-Z said
And speaking of JEFF the Brotherhood, feast your eyes on this live jam on KEXP from the Gibson Showroom in Austin during SXSW 2010.
8) There are five VIP Parties throughout the SoundLand week(end). Which one of the locations below is NOT hosting one of our free-drinks, free-food parties?
9) M. Ward has shared the stage and microphone with Norah Jones, Cat Power, Neko Case, Beth Orton, The Court & Spark, My Morning Jacket, Jenny Lewis, Bright Eyes, R.E.M., and Bruce Springsteen.
1. Foster the People
After reaching the #1 position on the Billboard Charts (for “Pumped Up Kicks”) they just played in front of 30,000 people at Lollapalooza during the day and then rocked a sold-out aftershow at House of Blues that same night. Not a bad week.
2. M. Ward
This native of Portland, OR (Matt Ward) – who grew up listening to gospel and country... two genres that figure prominently in his breezy, West Coast take on Americana – is playing six shows across Europe before gracing the SoundLand stage: Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, England, The Netherlands, back to Sweden... then... our very own Nashville!
3. Ghostland Observatory
Wall Street Journal’s Culture page said in April: “Comparisons to Daft Punk are apt to a degree, but there's really no act like them.” Since their live show often features up to 16 lasers and a sophisticated assemblage of mirrors scattered around the stage, we’re with you WSJ.
4. Yelawolf
Fresh off this year’s Warped Tour and recently signed to Eminem’s record label, his new album “Radioactive” will be released just four days after his performance at SoundLand. Can you say CD release street-party?
5. Justin Townes Earle
Son of legendary and ground-breaking singer/songwriter Steve Earle, he’s not lacking in accolades himself: Americana Music Awards Best New & Emerging Artist for 2009... Best Records of 2010 by Amazon... Four Stars Review of his album “Midnight at the Movies” in Rolling Stone... and most impressively, GQ’s 25 Most Stylish Men in the World for 2010.
6. Big K.R.I.T.
He’s not just sharing a stage with Yelawolf at SoundLand and releasing his new album the same day September 27, but together they laced a self-produced track and spit their “firewater” over the twinkling piano keys in the celebratory single “Happy Birthday Hip Hop”.
7. Dawes
This four-piece band from L.A. started out jamming with Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, Pat Sansone from Wilco, Robbie Robertson of The Band, and The Black Crowes's Chris Robinson... then topped it off with a song in a Chevy commercial airing now and an appearance on David Letterman this June.
8. Bonobo
He’s not only a producer and DJ who receives critical acclaim – KCRW giving him album of the year nods – but you’ll also find his tunes scattered throughout pop-culture, household-name media like “Lost”, Showtime’s “The L Word”, “House”, “Californication”, Adult Swim commercials on Cartoon Network, “Gossip Girl”, “CSI”... and even video games like “Need for Speed”.
9. JEFF the Brotherhood
SPIN magazine is a big fan of these guys (yes, we don’t blame them and yes, they’re indeed brothers). They were named one of the “Must-hear Acts” at SXSW 2011 and "Best Spring Tours" of 2011. Then they followed up the praise by recording Nirvana’s “Something in the Way” on SPIN’s “Nevermind” tribute album.
10. Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit
Sure, he’s a former member of Drive-By Truckers... but five years later his new band (The 400 Unit) has since recorded at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL and played over 200 dates promoting the release of “Sirens Of The Ditch” (including All Points West, Voodoo Music Experience, and WXPN Freedom Fest) .
